User Reviews about Viking: Battle for Asgard
As I understand it, Viking: Battle for Asgard was something of a dud when it was first released. I first picked up a used copy at Gamestop for 15 bucks... and proceeded to play it so many times that it developed stress fractures around the center of the disc from me taking it in and out of the case so many times.
I picked up a second copy for $9. I can't say how many times I've played it, but it has become just about my favorite out of all the games I have ever played. I understand it is not for everyone, as one reviewer said there is a lot of just running around, but for me it is ideal, because it captures exactly what I want in a video game experience.
Unlike say, The Force Unleashed, this game is not a nonstop barrage of mindless action. If you want action, you can always venture out and chop some Legion to pieces. But if you want to search for treasure to upgrade your weapons, or set free some Viking prisoners, or just explore a beautifully realized world, you can do that too. Although the graphics look primitive now, (i.e. the characters' lips don't move when they talk) the landscapes and views still hold up well.
If I get off of a stressful day at work, I can turn on my PS3 and escape in the Viking world. If I want to smash some heads and work out my frustration, I can seek out some Legion and chop them to pieces. If I want to relax and explore a beautiful landscape, I can do that too. The story is engaging, and has some amazing, epic battles involving armies of thousands, and you are right there fighting in the middle of it. I didn't find the battles too difficult. To me they were challenging, but not impossible.
Since it wasn't a fantastic success, I guess there will never be a sequel, which is a shame to me. I would love to see the game taken to a new level. -- Great game, great price
I seriously don't know what everyone's complaining about. I think this game is awesome. It's right up there with God of War. The controls are easy, the graphics and scenery is beautiful and the overall gameplay is entertaining. For a guy who prefers swords over guns, I love this game. And it's a decent homage to my ancestors who were Vikings. I'd have loved to live back then. For a game that won't hurt the wallet too much, this is a great buy. Luckily they had it at one of the GAMESTOP's where I live so it didn't cost me a thing. If you're a dork like me, get this game. May the heroes of Valhalla watch over you and may Freya guide your blade. -- Don't be fooled by the reviews, Viking: Battle for Asgard is a great game.
A lot of the criticism about the game in other reviews is correct. Fighting on a slope is a pain because you miss constantly. The camera is sometime wonky. There are some frame rate problems. To address some of the other issues, the game is not impossibly hard. I am a moderate game player and I got through this one easily. You can get through all the early stuff just constantly mashing buttons. As the game goes on it is good to learn to block and dodge. Also to learn new moves which destroy enemy shields is very helpful. As for jogging all over the map, there are transport portals all over the map, so there is not endless running around. If you like hack and slash games, this one is slightly above average. A lot of great ideas, just not all executed very well. The game suffers from repetition. You need to liberate 3 islands from the dreaded Legion. But all play out the same way. A lot of fetch quests, destroy enemy bases, summon that islands dragon and free prisoners to raise an army large enough to take out the main enemy city. The battles are fun to look at, but you do not lead your soldiers in any way. You are given a task such as taking out a shaman or a dragon, it just so happens a battle is happening around you. Like God of War the kill scenes are fun and bloody, but this one falls short of GOW status in just about every other area. Still I had fun, and think it is well worth the cheap price it is now selling for. -- As a Hack N Slash 4
This game is completely hack and slash, with some good maps, and some great graphics. You are the Viking Hero, and guess what...you kill the bad guys that are invading your land, that's it. The way you kill them though is great, there are a lot of moves to learn, and most are very violent for the most part. I was looking for a game I could play where I could beat up hordes of villians, get cool powers, and would not piss me off because of some stupid puzzles or bosses that are near invincible. This game was just what I was looking for.... -- A lot of fun....
dont spend more then $15 for this...graphics 7.0 out of 10....story 6.0 out of 10....you do the same things over and over in game...gets a little boring... -- ok if under $15
